The World's Tallest Mountains — But It Depends How You Measure

Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. Everyone knows that. But here's the thing — it's only true if you measure from sea level, which is a completely arbitrary starting point that we all just agreed on. Change the question slightly and you get completely different answers, and honestly the other answers are more interesting.

Chimborazo, a dormant volcano in Ecuador, is the point on Earth's surface that's furthest from the center of the planet — making it, in a real sense, closer to space than Everest. Mauna Kea in Hawaii is taller than Everest by over a mile if you measure from its base on the ocean floor. And the most technically impressive mountain feat — summiting all fourteen peaks above 8,000 meters — has only been done by a handful of people in history.

The mountain rankings shift completely depending on what you're actually asking. Here's how it breaks down.

The 14 Eight-Thousanders

There are exactly 14 mountains on Earth that exceed 8,000 meters above sea level. They're all in Asia — thirteen in the Himalayas and Karakoram ranges, spread across Nepal, China, India, and Pakistan. Collectively they're known as the "eight-thousanders," and climbing all fourteen is mountaineering's most demanding achievement. As of 2024, fewer than 50 people have done it.

Everest was measured at 8,848 meters for decades until a joint Chinese-Nepali survey in 2020 revised it to 8,848.86 meters — officially rounded to 8,849. The revision came partly from more precise GPS technology and partly from an agreement on whether to measure to the rock surface or include the snow cap on top. They went with the snow.

The death zone: Above 8,000 meters, the air contains about a third of the oxygen available at sea level. The human body cannot acclimatize at this altitude — it simply deteriorates. Climbers call anything above 8,000 m "the death zone" because you cannot survive there indefinitely no matter how fit you are. Every summit attempt is a race against your own physiology.

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit first on May 29, 1953. Hillary's response upon returning to base camp was characteristically understated — he reportedly told fellow climber George Lowe, "Well, George, we knocked the bastard off." Tenzing's response was to offer Hillary biscuits and chocolates from his pack, which he'd been carrying for the summit.

Over 300 people have died on Everest. Because conditions make body recovery nearly impossible at extreme altitude, many remain on the mountain. Some are visible landmarks that other climbers pass on their way up.

K2 is widely considered the hardest and most dangerous of the eight-thousanders. For every four people who have reached its summit, roughly one has died trying. Compare that to Everest, where the death rate is around 1–2%. K2 has no easy route — every approach involves technical climbing, extreme avalanche exposure, and brutal weather that rolls in without warning.

No winter summit until 2021: Everest was first summited in winter in 1980. K2 had no winter ascent for decades — the conditions were simply considered unsurvivable. A team of Nepalese climbers finally reached the summit on January 16, 2021, in what many consider the greatest mountaineering achievement of the modern era. Temperatures were around −60°C with hurricane-force winds.

The name "K2" comes from the 1856 survey notation — it was the second peak measured in the Karakoram range, and unlike most major peaks, it has no local name in common use because it's so remote that no settlement has ever had a clear view of it.

This one requires a quick explanation of Earth's shape. The planet isn't a perfect sphere — it bulges at the equator due to its rotation, meaning the equator is about 21 kilometers further from Earth's center than the poles are. Chimborazo sits almost directly on the equator in Ecuador, at about 1.5°S latitude. Everest sits at 28°N — further from the equatorial bulge.

The real "top of the world": Everest's peak is 6,382.3 km from Earth's center. Chimborazo's peak is 6,384.4 km from Earth's center — about 2.1 km further out. If you define "tallest" as "furthest from the center of the planet," Chimborazo wins. Your head is literally further from Earth's core standing on Chimborazo's summit than it would be on Everest's.

Chimborazo is a dormant volcano. At 6,263 meters above sea level, it wouldn't crack the top 100 highest peaks by standard measurement. But the equatorial bulge math makes it the point on Earth's surface that's closest to the Moon, the Sun, and outer space. Charles Darwin visited Ecuador in 1835 and wrote about the mountain, though he didn't attempt to climb it.

Mauna Kea looks modest on a map of Hawaii — it's the big island's tallest peak at 4,205 meters, not remarkable by global standards. But the mountain doesn't start at sea level. It rises from the floor of the Pacific Ocean, about 6,000 meters below the surface. Measure from base to peak and Mauna Kea reaches 10,210 meters — roughly 1,400 meters taller than Everest.

The summit is one of the best places on Earth to look at the sky: Mauna Kea's summit sits above about 40% of Earth's atmosphere and above most of its water vapor, which blurs astronomical observations. Thirteen countries operate observatories there. The summit has become the center of a significant cultural and legal dispute — it's considered sacred in Native Hawaiian tradition, and telescope construction has been contested for years in court and in protest.

The summit is also cold enough to snow — Mauna Kea has its own ski area, which remains one of the stranger things you can do in Hawaii. The drive from the beach to the snow-covered summit takes about two hours.

Annapurna was actually the first eight-thousander ever summited — a French expedition reached the top in 1950, three years before Everest. The mountaineers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal made the summit but suffered severe frostbite on the descent. Herzog lost all his fingers and toes. He later wrote a book about the expedition that became one of the best-selling mountaineering books of all time.

The deadliest ratio: About 30% of people who have attempted Annapurna have died doing so, the highest death rate of any eight-thousander. The mountain is notorious for avalanche exposure — the approach routes and upper slopes funnel enormous amounts of snow and ice. Many climbers who have survived K2 or Everest consider Annapurna more frightening.

The Mountains You Don't Hear About

Some of the most geographically interesting mountains aren't the tallest. Mount Thor on Baffin Island in Canada has the world's greatest purely vertical drop — its west face drops 1,250 meters straight down, overhanging at an average angle of 105 degrees. Denali in Alaska (6,190 m) sits at such high latitude that the altitude feels equivalent to an 8,000 meter peak in the Himalayas due to lower atmospheric pressure near the poles. And Mount Olympus on the Mediterranean seabed — not the Greek one — rises over 2,000 meters from the seafloor and isn't visible at all.

The more you dig into this stuff, the more "tallest mountain" starts to feel like the least interesting question you could ask about mountains.
